Awards and Scholarships
In recognition of our members’ accomplishments and our volunteers’ efforts, the AMC Boston Chapter Mountaineering Committee gives back to our community through several annual awards and scholarships.
Scott Sandberg Volunteer of the Year Award
Scott Sandberg was an active, enthusiastic, and dedicated volunteer during the brief time he was a member of our community. In honor of his memory, each year the AMC Boston Chapter Mountaineering Committee awards one volunteer for their efforts over the previous year. The award recipient is chosen by the chair and other committee members.

Craigen Bowen Memorial Climbing Scholarship
Craigen Bowen was a beloved member of the Boston climbing community and a tireless volunteer who served as Director of the Rock Program, Editor of The Crux, a Mountaineering Committee member, and a mentor to countless climbers.
The Craigen Bowen Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a community member who is a promising beginner in their first few years of climbing, or otherwise eager to advance in rock or ice climbing skills, safety/rescue or instructional skills, or other mountaineering endeavors. Recipients will use the funds for formal mountaineering-related instruction offered by an established organization or guide. Funds may be awarded to cover part or all of the program cost, depending on availability of funds and other factors. Preference is given to applicants who demonstrate a desire to use their skills to give back to the AMC community through service or instruction.
All applications will be reviewed by the AMC Boston Chapter Mountaineering Scholarship Subcommittee.
Only 1 submission per person per year is allowed.

Lifetime Achievement Award
The AMC Boston climbing community is fortunate to have many volunteers who have dedicated decades of their free time to giving back to the climbing community, and the Lifetime Achievement Award is a small way of recognizing their great efforts. Lifetime Achievement Award candidates can be nominated by any community member through November. A finalist is selected by the Mountaineering Committee in December with the result is announced at the annual Holiday Party.

This scholarship will cover the full program tuition fee for the ice program the year it is awarded. Recipients will still be responsible for other costs associated with the program (such as gear for the weekends, and transportation)
